Biography

About Sean

Sean Serafini was born and raised in southeast Michigan. He graduated from Troy Athens High School with one of the top ten highest college admission scores in his graduating class and earned a full semester of college credit while playing varsity hockey. Following high school, Sean attended Grand Valley State University on an academic scholarship.

During college, he interned with several prominent law firms in both metro-Detroit and Grand Rapids, gaining experience working on behalf of injured people and small businesses. He graduated with honors in three years with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a major in general business, allowing him to focus his studies on both pre-law and finance/business management.

Sean then received an academic scholarship from Wayne State University School of Law to continue his studies. While in law school, he worked directly for an insurance company's in-house legal division before accepting a job as a law clerk at a large insurance defense firm, assisting with several high-exposure premises liability and 1st- and 3rd-party auto negligence cases. He graduated from law school in the top quarter of his class in 2022.

After graduation, Sean spent the first six months of his career at the firm where he had clerked during law school. He joined SMDA in March 2023. In his first full year with the firm, Sean recovered over $1,750,000 for his clients.

In 2025, Sean became the youngest Michigan attorney ever named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers — an achievement limited to just 2.5% of attorneys practicing less than ten years. In April 2026, he argued before the Michigan Supreme Court in Frownfelter v. Esurance Property, addressing auto no-fault and bodily injury insurance coverage for the children of divorced parents.

Sean has also taken on the role of SMDA's designated appellate writer and is responsible for drafting appeals to the Michigan Court of Appeals and Michigan Supreme Court. This has allowed SMDA to keep the vast majority of appeals in-house instead of outsourcing them to another firm — reducing costs for clients and ensuring the same attorneys are involved with the file from start to finish.

Sean currently lives in Rochester Hills. He spends his spare time golfing during the summer and playing hockey during the winter. He also enjoys fishing and working on cars.

Representative Clients

"My clients are typically people who have been injured in a motor vehicle accident involving a car, truck, or motorcycle, or by someone else's negligence — slip and falls, dangerous conditions on someone else's property, dog bites, or similar scenarios. I also represent individuals and small businesses in contract disputes, insurance coverage disputes, contract drafting, and business formation and organization matters."
